8/31/2005 - NetflixAdvanced Movable Type Plugin Released under the GPL

NC Design is pleased to announce the release of a new Movable Type plugin that allows users to display links to Netflix movies on their blogs.

NetflixAdvanced overcomes many of the limitations of previous Netflix plugins. Other plugins use a client session ID that is stored in the plugin script to "scrape" the contents of Netflix pages for queue and movie information. This exposes the end user to two major problems. First, to a hacker a session ID is as good as a user ID and password. With a simple script and a client session ID a potential thief could login to your account and retrieve personal information or make changes. Also, a session ID is designed to expire, and when it does any scripts using the ID will cease to function until it is updated. This approach to retrieving information also puts undue pressure on the Netflix web site.

The NetflixAdvanced plugin overcomes these problems by using the RSS feeds provided by Netflix.com to access information about your account. These feeds are made publicly accessible by Netflix using a special URL. Since the site does not require a login to access these feeds, there is no need for a session ID on your web log server to allow the script to retrieve this information.

NetflixAdvanced also includes more advanced features, like the ability to setup a private queue of movies for display on your site, with links to Netflix (regardless of what is actually in your Netflix queue).
